October 1944

• October 2 – A Polish uprising against the Nazis in Warsaw ended after 68 days, leaving 200,000 civilians dead and much of the city ruined. A staff sergeant of the 7th Ferrying Group was stabbed to death near Fort Benton, suicide suspected.

• October 9 – Six were charged in the murder of Billings resident Frederick Kembel.

• October 11 – Two German POWs escaped from a farm near Hathaway.

• October 20 – Senator and vice-presidential candidate Harry Truman spoke in Butte. U.S. troops landed on the Philippine island of Leyte.

• October 23 – Two German POWs escaped from the Sidney camp. One was believed to be wearing women’s clothing after performing in a play.

• October 26 – The Montana Education Association met in Helena.

• October 28 – Prison inmates and Warm Springs patients helped the Forest Service put out a 90-acre fire near the Deer Lodge racetrack.

• October 29 – Pheasant season opened.

• July 1 – A fire at a Butte manganese plant caused $3,000 damage. The State Capitol bond was paid off after 46 years. A Wilsall woman received a card mailed by her father in White Sulphur Springs more than 30 years before.

• July 4 – Murrill’s Cocktail Lounge in Great Falls had its entire liquor stock seized for allegedly giving a false report of stock on hand.

• July 5 – An Augusta bar owner killed a drunk cowboy in self–defense.

• July 12 – A Hesper woman murdered her husband and infant son, then set fire to the house and killed herself.

• July 13 – Singer Dinah Shore sprained her ankle while vacationing with husband George Montgomery at Lincoln.

• July 18 – A primary election was held in Montana.

• July 20 – A bomb planted by a German officer exploded in Hitler’s bunker but failed to kill him.

• July 31 – Adm. Charles P. Cecil, formerly the captain of the

USS Helena, was killed in a plane crash in the Pacific.

• August 1 – The Helena rodeo opened.

• August 2 – Miners Field Day was celebrated in Butte.

• August 7 – The 13th annual Northern Montana Fair opened to record attendance in Great Falls. A pilot died when his A-20 crashed 14 miles from Great Falls.

• August 8 – A woman taxi driver was beaten and robbed of $33 in Great Falls.

• August 13 – The Midland Empire Fair opened in Billings. A strike closed the Pierce Packing Co. in Billings after the company hired a non-union carpenter. The company sued the union for $150,000 damages.

• August 14 – The Cole Brothers Circus performed in Great Falls.

• August 15 – Three drowned in the Thompson River.

• August 18 – Five–year–old Charlie Crocker of Great Falls was flown to St. Louis for emergency surgery to remove a tooth stuck in his bronchial passage.

• August 22 – State Treasurer Thomas E. Carey was found dead of an apparent heart attack in a Spokane hotel room.

• August 23 – The week-long Pierce Packing strike ended in Billings after the company fired the non-union carpenter whose hiring led to the strike.

• August 25 – French and American troops entered Paris.

• August 29 – Soviet and Polish authorities revealed the atrocities committed by the Nazis at Majdanek concentration camp, where 1.5 million people were murdered.
